Iowans Fit for Life Coalition Receives Grant
The Iowans Fit for Life (IFFL) Coalition was formed in 2006 as a result of the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) approaching ISU Extension Services and Public Health with a $10,000 grant to improve access to physical activity and/or to fruits and vegetables in the Boone community. As a result, the Middle School Track was formed to promote physical activity among school-aged children and the community. IFFL members include the Boone County Hospital Foundation, ISU Extension, Boone Community Schools, the Boone Postmaster, the City Engineer, Public Health and community members.
After completion of this project, IDPH teamed up with the Iowa Network for Community Agriculture (INCA) and approached Boone County with another opportunity. IFFL started with a number of projects of interest and narrowed the focus to a Safe Routes to School Program. IFFL was awarded funds to implement this initiative through the National Governor’s Association. Only 13 states were awarded this grant; Boone County was one of three in Iowa.
In 2008, IFFL received a grant for $20,200 from the Iowa Department of Transportation to continue their efforts with the Safe Routes to School Program. With the grant, IFFL will implement or improve several educational opportunities related to walking and biking to school including a bike rodeo, walking school bus, Go the Distance Day, National Walk to School Day, marketing and public forum, and student BMI (body mass index) measurement.
The coalition plans to apply for another grant in October 2008 as part of the second phase of the planning process. If you would like to become involved, please contact Sara Behn at 433-8470.
