BCH Recognized for Achievement

December 14, 2017

Boone County Hospital (BCH) was recently notifed by the Hospital Improvement Innovation Network (HIIN) of our achievement of success with our CAUTI (catheter associated urinary tract infection) rate from May through July, 2017. BCH is among the top 10 performing hospitals in Iowa for this particular measure.

CAUTI is a serious infection that occurs when bacteria enters the body through a urinary catheter. It is the fourth most common type of healthcare-associated infection. Each day an indwelling catheter remains in place, a patient has a three to seven percent increased risk of acquiring a CAUTI. It is estimated that each year, more than 13,000 deaths are associated with UTI’s.

This measure looks at catheter utilization in inpatient settings and within the Emergency Department. The outcome measure focuses on the number of hospital-acquired urinary tract infections that occur. The Iowa Healthcare Collaborative-Compass HIIN program is a statewide group that is designed to help serve rural hospitals with tools and resources. Our data is compared to other rural hospitals statewide.
