3D Mammograms

In 2017, the BCH Foundation raised funds for 3D mammography at Boone County Hospital (BCH).

According to the American Cancer Society:

  • Over 230,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer are diagnosed each year in women and over 2,300 in men;

  • Approximately 40,000 women and 440 men died of breast cancer in 2015;

  • There are over 3.1 million breast cancer survivors in the United States

Breast cancer is found and diagnosed through a radiologic scan called mammography.  Most women start receiving annual mammograms at the age 40 to 45 unless there is a family history, then they can begin scans much younger.

BCH serves approximately 1,500 patients for their annual mammogram. The goal at BCH is to provide care close to home so that our community does not need to travel outside of Boone County to receive the best care.

Why 3D mammography?  The Hologic 3D Mammography implementation goals include:

  • Small lumps or masses that may not be noticed by the patient can be found to treat cancer early and, in turn, save lives.

  • A 41% reduction in callbacks for patients who have received a mammogram.  A call back can cause increased anxiety and concern to the patient.  Additionally, it costs the hospital, insurance companies, and the patient more money to come back for additional testing that may not be necessary with the 3D technology.

  • The 3D technology is unique in that it takes an image set in one-millimeter layers that look like flipping the pages of a book.  In 2D mammography, the breast tissue is viewed and can show cancer that is not there (false positive) or not see cancer that is there (false negative), again providing uncertainty and anxiety to the patient.

3D mammography is the most up-to-date technology available, and we have it available right here at Boone County Hospital. Call the Radiology Department at (515) 433-8160 to schedule your mammogram today.
